Generation Z is making its impact on LHS.

Generation Z is the generation that grew up tech-savvy. Also known as the iGeneration or Generation Net, this is the term for children born from 1995 to 2010.  No one is sure where the name Generation Z came from, but it is now the common term for our generation.

Each generation is given a name that represents it. The most common one people may hear is the Baby Boomers, the term that covers all children born between the years 1946 and 1964. The more recent generations are generations X, Y, and Z.

Generation X, also known as Gen X and the Unknown Generation, is the generation for the children born after the World War II veterans’ children, the Baby Boomer generation. These children are the children born from 1966 to 1976. These children are the ones who grew up with political experience and cultural perspectives.

Generation Y, also known as the Millennial Generation, consists of children who are considered the Echo Boomers, due to the increased birth rate between the 1980’s and early 1990’s. These are the children born from 1977 to 1994. They are more ethnically diverse and are very family-oriented. They are very sophisticated and are able to change and adapt to the times around them.

Generation Z is the generation for current LHS students. These are the children born from 1995 to 2010. This is the generation that grew up with cell phones. We are the children who are highly connected to media technology such as the World Wide Web and text messaging.  Our ability to use technology has earned us the nickname “digital natives” due to our lack of limitations when it comes to the digital media.

These are also the children who grew up around war and lived through tragedy such as 9/11 during the first few years of their lives. They are the children who grew up familiar with the unpredictability of the safety of the world around them.  Additionally, ours is the generation with the most home-schooled children.

We Gen Z’ers are the children who grew up living with severe financial hurdles and distrust for political systems. We are the generation to watch Generation Y struggle to get jobs and to see families lose jobs, their houses and their cars.

Ours is also the generation that grew up without the traditional manners that were instilled into the Generations X and Y. In fact, as children get more absorbed into their electronics, they shut out the people around them.

Finally, Generation Z is the generation of medication. Our generation has the highest number of children who are medicated for attention disorders and behavior issues. Parents are choosing, according to researchers, to medicate their children instead of disciplining them, as was done for previous generations.

Our generation has inherited many problems from our previous generations. These issues we have received have caused us to be more distrustful as well as more absorbed into our electronics. We have many challenges that face us as we mature and take control of the world, even with all of its problems, but with our tech-savvy skills and our desire to change politics for the better, we have a real chance at making a difference in our society.
